Why Is Your Business Not Showing Up On Google Maps? (And How To Fix It)

If someone searches for your type of business in your city and you don't show up — that customer is calling your competitor right now.

Google Maps is where local buying decisions get made. And if you're invisible there, it doesn't matter how good your service is. Here are the most common reasons businesses don't show up on Google Maps and exactly what to do about it.

First — How Does Google Decide Who Shows Up?

Before we fix anything, you need to understand how the Google Maps Pack works.

When someone searches "plumber near me" or "best dentist in St. Helens," Google shows three local businesses in what's called the Map Pack — the box with the map and three listings that appears above all the regular search results.

Google picks those three businesses based on three factors:

  • Relevance — Does your profile match what the person searched for?

  • Distance — How close is your business to the searcher?

  • Prominence — How well-known and trusted is your business online?

If you're not in the top three, you're essentially invisible for that search. Here's why that might be happening.

Reason 1: You Haven't Claimed Your Google Business Profile

This is the most common reason — and the easiest fix.

If you've never gone to Google Business Profile and claimed your listing, Google may have created a basic profile for you automatically. That auto-generated profile is incomplete, unverified, and ranks near the bottom.

The fix: Go to Google Business Profile, search for your business, and claim it. You'll need to verify ownership — usually through a postcard Google mails to your business address, or via phone/email verification.

Once verified, you control what shows up. That's when the real optimization begins.

Reason 2: Your Profile Is Incomplete

Google rewards businesses that fill out every single field. If your profile is missing hours, a description, photos, or your service area — you're leaving ranking power on the table.

  • ✅ Business name (exactly as it appears in real life)

  • ✅ Address or service area

  • ✅ Phone number

  • ✅ Website URL

  • ✅ Business hours (including holidays)

  • ✅ Business category (primary + secondary)

  • ✅ Business description with keywords

  • ✅ At least 10 photos

  • ✅ Services or products listed

  • ✅ Questions & Answers section populated

Most businesses fill out 4 or 5 of these and stop. That's not enough. Google treats an incomplete profile as an incomplete business.

The fix: Log into your Google Business Profile and fill out every field. Don't skip the description — that's where you naturally work in the keywords people are searching for.

Reason 3: Your Business Information Is Inconsistent Across the Web

This one surprises a lot of people.

Google cross-references your business information across hundreds of websites — Yelp, Yellow Pages, Facebook, local directories, and more. If your name, address, or phone number (called your NAP) is different on any of these sites, it creates a trust problem.

For example:

  • Google Business Profile says: "SERP & Co — 123 Main St"

  • Yelp says: "SERP and Co — 123 Main Street"

  • Facebook says: "SERP & Company — 123 Main St Suite A"

To a human those all look like the same business. To Google's algorithm, they look like three different businesses — and none of them get the trust boost they should.

The fix: Search your business name and audit every listing you find. Make sure your NAP is identical — same spelling, same abbreviations, same everything — everywhere your business appears online.

Reason 4: You Have No Reviews (Or Only Bad Ones)

Reviews are one of the biggest ranking signals for the Google Maps Pack.

Businesses with more reviews — especially recent, positive ones — consistently outrank businesses with fewer reviews, even if everything else is equal. Google sees reviews as social proof that your business is active, legitimate, and trusted by real customers.

The fix: Start asking for reviews. The easiest way is to text or email your best customers a direct link to your Google review page right after you complete a job. A simple message works:

"Hey [Name], really glad we could help. If you have 60 seconds, a Google review would mean a lot to us — here's the link: [link]"

Most people are happy to leave one. They just need to be asked.

And if you have negative reviews — respond to every single one professionally. How you respond to a bad review tells potential customers more about you than the review itself.

Reason 5: You're in the Wrong Category

Your primary business category is one of the most important fields in your Google Business Profile — and a lot of businesses get it wrong.

If you're a plumber and you selected "Home Services" instead of "Plumber," Google doesn't know to show you when someone searches "plumber near me."

The fix: Log into your profile and check your primary category. Make sure it's as specific as possible. You can also add secondary categories — for example, a plumber might add "Drainage Service" and "Water Heater Installation Service" as secondary categories to capture more searches.

Reason 6: You're Too New

If you just claimed or created your Google Business Profile, it takes time. Google needs to verify your business is real, active, and trustworthy before it starts showing you prominently.

A brand new profile with no reviews, no posts, and no activity isn't going to rank in the top three — yet.

The fix: Be patient, but be active. Post to your profile weekly. Get your first reviews. Add photos. The more signals of activity you send, the faster Google starts to trust your listing.

The Bottom Line

Not showing up on Google Maps is almost always fixable. In most cases it comes down to one or more of these six things:

  1. You haven't claimed your profile

  2. Your profile is incomplete

  3. Your business info is inconsistent online

  4. You have too few reviews

  5. You're in the wrong category

  6. Your profile is too new

The businesses sitting in those top three Map Pack spots aren't there by accident. They've done the work — or they hired someone to do it for them.
